….Campaigning with Romney is like traveling back to the era of Sputnik and soda fountains, with dated expressions and awkward punch-lines, or Mittisms, as aides call them.  “Oh, my goodness,” Romney exclaimed, as he looked at old photos in the Chicago restaurant Harry Caray’s with the widow of the famous Cubs broadcaster. “Gosh, your husband, what a guy. I sure miss him.”

Hey Hey! U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi showed up at a fundraiser at Harry Caray’s Steakhouse on Kinzie Thursday with a signed ball her son caught during one of the Giants’ recent World Series games.

◆Upshot: Harry Caray’s CEO Grant DePorter, who blasted the infamous Bartman ball to smithereens, gave Pelosi a signed Ernie “Mr. Cub” Banks ball to take home after unsuccessfully requesting the Giants ball for the Caray’s collection.

◆The final shot: Pelosi said she’d put the Banks ball next to her next to her signed ball from Bobby “Shot Heard Round the World” Thompson at home.

Democrats turn to Pelosi, Emanuel for fundraising help
Democratic congressional challengers sought the help of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi at a downtown Chicago fundraiser Thursday while Republican incumbents sought to turn her visit into a warning about future control of the House.  With Illinois a key state for Democratic hopes of gaining the 25 seats the party needs to end the House GOP majority, Pelosi and Mayor Rahm Emanuel led a fundraising reception at Harry Caray’s for six congressional contenders that cost between $250 and $2,500 a person.  The closed door visit by Pelosi, the former House speaker from California, marked the second time in less than a month she has led a fundraising event at the restaurant on behalf of Democrats running in closely contested House races here.  As she entered the restaurant, Pelosi held aloft a baseball filled with autographs and explained, “Giants victory baseball” — a reference to this year’s World Series champions from San Francisco in her home district.  Inside, she told supporters it was a ball her son caught during the Series, according to one attendee who was not authorized to speak about the event.

To celebrate the Bears’ win over the Lions on “Monday Night Football,” left tackle J’Marcus Webb walked up to Harry Caray’s on Kinzie, where he was immediately swamped by fans asking for autographs and posing for photos. …

Comedian Drew “The Price is Right” Carey had lunch at Harry Caray’s Tavern at Navy Pier Thursday . . . and shocked the waiter by leaving a $100 tip on a $50 bill.

Unfortunately, a number of people in the room thought McDonough was serious — including a guy who approached DePorter, gave him his card and said he wanted to be part of his campaign!

The veteran restaurateur and civic leader wants to make it very clear: “There is no chance I will ever run for mayor. … I am too big a fan of Rahm [Emanuel].”

The landmark 1895 building designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb is the only example of 19th-century Dutch Renaissance architecture left in Chicago.From 1939 to 1943, Frank Nitti — enforcer of the Al Capone gang — lived in an apartment on the fourth floor. Open for the weekend will be Nitti’s Vault in the basement, containing artifacts uncovered in the building, including a three-door safe, a phonebook of reputed gangsters, original Capone-era newspapers and photographs, secret rooms and Nitti’s rumored escape tunnel.

Harry Caray’s [Navy Pier] has weekly tailgating specials every Sunday for home and away games. The party starts at 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a selection of brunch tailgating items. The Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback, rookie Brandon Weeden, dined at Harry Caray’s on Kinzie while here for Ryder Cup watching. Fans of Disney Channel star Bridget Mendler (“Good Luck Charlie”) got a kick out of spotting her at Harry Caray’s. Mendler’s debut album, “Hello, My Name Is…,” will be released Oct. 22.

Everybody’s got to be somewhere, but Michael Jordan’s whereabouts were of much interest this week and weekend than yours or, at least, mine. With the Ryder Cup golf championship being layed at Medinah Country Club in the Chicago suburbs – and with Jordan serving as an advisor to Team USA at Carolina pal Davis Love III’s request – the Bulls’ Hall of Famer was a target for celebrity snooping.

There were several sightings of His Airness, not only on the course but at some of the finer eateries in the city and ‘burbs.  A brief rundown of His Whereness, thanks to the Chicago Tribune’s (column):  Team USA — including Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watsonand Fred Couples — had dinner Monday and Thursday at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse in Lombard. Michael Jordan, who was named Team USA advisor, joined the guys Thursday at Harry Caray’s and signed autographs and posed for photos with patrons.  Team Europe – including Jose Maria Olazabal, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia — dined Tuesday at Harry Caray’s in Lombard.

Halloween starts early at Harry Caray’s Tavern, Navy Pier. Beginning Friday, October 19^th, Haunted Harry’s will be decorated from top to bottom with ghouls, goblins, spider webs and tombstones and will offer fun activities on the weekends for kids.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Keep the kids entertained with Harry’s Halloween Scavenger Hunt.  Follow clues to search through Harry’s Wall of Fame and the Chicago Sports Museum to find kid-friendly celebrity photos, like Dora the Explorer, and artifacts, such as Harold Ramis’ (Egon Spengler) jumpsuit from Ghostbusters and Richard Dent’s Super Bowl XX Trophy. More options near Ryder Cup: A few readers of last week’s Ryder Cup dining story (which listed restaurants in the general vicinity of Medinah Country Club, where the cup is happening) wrote in to say I overlooked a lot of good places. SPORTS SHORTS: A few Major Leaguers not only share a love (and talent) for America’s pastime, but also similar dining tastes. To wit, the Cubs’ Welington Castillo dropped by Harry Caray’s on Kinzie and ordered a prime rib-eye Saturday. The same night teammate Joe Mather also dined at the eatery and ordered the same steak. Then on Sunday, in came the Twins’ first baseman Justin Morneau with friends and family, and he ordered a rib-eye as well. … Meanwhile the Cubs’ Brett Jackson was spied at Harry Caray’s Tavern Navy Pier. No word on what he ate!

Park and Cruise | Every Chicago Home Game
For every home regular season football game beginning September 9th, avoid pre- and post-game traffic hassles and sky-high parking rates with Harry’s Park, Tailgate and Cruise party. After tailgating at Harry’s, guests can board the Shoreline Water Taxi located directly in front of the restaurant, and take a 15-minute scenic cruise to Museum Campus, just a short walk from Chicago’s home field. The roundtrip water taxi ride will be discounted for guests of Harry Caray’s ($11/adult (a $5 savings), $6/child 12 and under (a $4 savings), kids 2 and under ride free) and will include the choice of a beverage to bring on the ride (Budweiser, Pepsi product, juice or bottled water). Big plans for Motor Row live inside Cheap Trick’s heads

The Cheap Trick Chicago restaurant, music venue and museum will be rockin’ by next summer if all goes according to plan.

The Cheap Trick restaurant would be operated by Grant DePorter of the Harry Caray Restaurant group. “Our involvement goes back to 2010,” DePorter said. “The band came in on a Tuesday and wanted to meet with Mayor Daley at 2 o’clock. They thought you could just meet with the mayor without a lot of notice. I called his deputy chief of staff, who checked with the mayor, who said he was a huge Cheap Trick fan. He cleared his schedule right away.” DePorter and Cheap Trick met with Mayor Daley in his office. Talk about wanting to want you. DePorter said, “Mayor Daley really believed in that project. He asked the band what needs they had. Rick is always talking about branding. DePorter sees untapped tourism potential for Motor Row, especially with its proximity to McCormick Place. “They are putting a [Green Line Cermak] L stop there, which is huge,” he said. “The McCormick Place [union] reforms are working and bringing a lot of new conventions back to Chicago. Different businesses will be looking to relocate there because whenever there is a convention, you will have built-in business. The key is having a critical mass. As part of Steak Week, Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse, L&L Packing Company and Ridge Vineyards are joining forces on Thursday, June 7th to offer the 2nd Annual STEAK 101—a seven course steak and wine dinner where guests learn from the experts while enjoying an evening of extraordinary food and wine.

Harry Caray’s Executive Chef Peter McGarrity and Sommelier Mark Molitor have created an incomparable tasting menu designed to answer the most commonly asked questions about ordering steak and wine.  For each course, Joel Lezak, owner of L&L Packing Company, one of the most highly regarded steak suppliers in the city, will compare and contrast the characteristics of two different steak options, including choice vs. prime beef, dry-aged vs. wet-aged beef, grass-fed vs. corn-fed beef and wagyu vs. prime beef.  Ridge Vineyards Wine Ambassador Christina Donley will explain how the qualities of the meat influence the choice of wine for each course. Ridge is known for producing exceptional single-vineyard Zinfandels, and each steak course will feature a different Zinfandel or Zinfandel blend, including vintages sourced from vineyards where many of the planted vines are more than one hundred years old. Ridge Estate Zinfandels and Zinfandel blends are hand crafted by nature with as little intervention as possible by using sustainable farming practices and native yeasts to showcase the wines relative to their individual soils and micro climates.

The holiday weekend is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family and fire up the grill. You just need the right ingredients for a great barbecue. Among the most important things is of course the meat! But how do you choose the right cut? Joe Rosetti, executive chef of Harry Caray’s Restaurant Group , came into our ABC7 studio to explain the differences between the cuts of meat.

Concessions at Midway and O’Hare Get “Green” Ratings

Several restaurants at Midway and O’Hare International Airports are joining the Chicago Department of Aviation’s (CDA) overall efforts to make Chicago’s airports the greenest in the world – and are now getting the recognition they deserve.  Midway and O’Hare concessionaires are making their daily operations greener by composting kitchen waste and coffee grounds, purchasing locally grown food, avoiding the use of Styrofoam containers and donating surplus food to charities.  The CDA is pleased to announce the first four concessions at Midway and O’Hare that have received awards under the CDA Sustainable Airport Manual (SAM) green airplane rating system:

• Avoids use of Styrofoam for carryout food
• At least 50% of food sold is sourced within 250 miles
• Organic kitchen waste and coffee grounds are composted

• Sustainable operation procurement plan
• Employee education plan and newsletter
• Napkins and hand towels made of 100% recycled paper
• Energy conservation plan in place
